Episode 58: The Shout

Finally, the conclusion of The Big Romance between Black Canary and Ra's Al Ghul.  You heard right.  Chuck Dixon chose to have Black Canary leave one wonky romance with a pre-Columbian explorer to getting back to the present and falling for the Demon.  Only Dinah, right?  This issue has a "No Take Back" that you are not going to forget.

Joining Feathers and Foes this time around is Ryan Daly of the Power of Fishnets podcast over on the Fire and Water Podcast Network.

Episode 56: Source Code 2 Vial Not Found

Batgirl and the Birds of Prey 12, moves the story right along with guest appearance from Selina Kyle...Catwoman.  Calculator has gotten himself in too deep, and now his family are being held hostage at Terracare, a company claiming to be eco-friendly.  Although they are not keen on helping out former foe the Calculator, the Birds agree that with a mother and children involved, they must lend their service to saving innocents.

Catwoman stole something from the vaults of Terracare that has lead to the kidnapping.  The Birds are a little hesitant about contacting Catwoman. They don't know how she might react with them telling her that she is going to have to return the jewels back to Terracare.   Batgirl was right.  As you can see above, Catwoman for one, didn't appreciate the ruse that Batgirl played on her, which involves the Batman, and Batgirl placing her nose in Catwoman's business.  I'm totally surprised that Bruce played that game.  He will answer to Selina later, I'm sure.

Episode 55: The Courtship

Chuck Dixon ramps the drama up in this intense, romantic story involving Black Canary and Ra's Al Ghul.  And yes, Talia is not happy about the proposition her father offers to Dinah Lance.

Beautiful art by Butch Guice and Gloria Vasquez, who really capture the romance and horror of this book.  Mark and I are still puzzled by the characterization of Dinah, but there are so many talking points in this book that we really enjoyed discussing this story.

The emotional beats displayed in the writing and art are quite masterful.

Episode 54: The Stray

Feathers and Foes are back with another Pre New 52 adventure of Birds of Prey.  This one is called the Stray.  Mike McDonnell brings some interesting art to this one.  Chuck Dixon kind of has me confused with the characterization of Dinah, but I'm just going to ride with it.  Kind of like what Jason Bard is doing, while trying to remain alive.  Ra's Al Ghul and Talia are all in this one action packed book.  And I do mean action.

Don't be shy.  We really would like to hear from you guys.

Sarah of the and Ashford, podcaster for the Wright On Network joined forces to talk about the spectacular Wonder Woman film.  After only one viewing for each of the hosts, many of their thoughts are still discombobulated in their heads, but the enthusiasm isn't curbed one bit.

Episode 52: The Big Romance

Issue 31 of Birds of Prey is one of those stories where the main characters (Oracle and Black Canary) are peripheral, and the guest, Jason Bard, is our protagonist.  You know Jason Bard, he was featured in issues 1-3 of Birds of Prey.  We covered those issues about a year ago exactly.  Jason was Bab's fiance.  This is a cool issue.  We have a dated gumshoe, France, and Barbara Gordon doing her thing where she is "mad" manipulating everyone.  And a special surprise ending that will make you want to read issue 32 immediately. has more of our programming.

Go there for a review of the Wonder Woman movie.  Sarah of the and Ashford are going to analyze the movie.

Episode 50: Black Bird Rise

Celebrate with us, for the 50th episode of Feathers and Foes are upon us.  The Benson sisters have reached the conclusion of the 3 part saga of Black Bird, the villain who can steal powers from other metahumans.  Will she take Black Canary's powers?  The Sonic Cry!  You don't want to miss this one.

This is not a focal point of the story, but it's rather important.  If Gus is suffering from some type illness that is affecting his mental health, he has a right to keep it private; however, if his condition has the ability of positioning the Birds in danger out in the field, this is indeed a cause for concern.  This is a sensitive issue, and I am quite intrigued on how the Benson sisters tackle this issue.  Folks, we might be in a situation where we have only covered a thinly veiled surface.  Potentially, Gus might be an interesting character with layers and potential stories for the future.  Gus might be the beginning of cementing the Benson sisters' legacy, voice, and signature.

True to form, Huntress is always executed well  Her patience is limited when it comes to questioning Owen, which is quite endearing, for she cares for her friend, Black Canary.  Green Arrow, who makes an appearance in this one is not over bearing, and he's not projecting any of the unattractive qualities that otherwise turn people off.  In fact, he mentions that if Black Canary is under mind control, there is no way they can stop her.  He is not trying to save a defenseless Canary.  He just wants to know if she is OK.
Those of you who have listened to Feathers and Foes from our inception, you have noticed that Mark and Ashford take a lot of cheap shots at Nightwing, insinuating that he is some sort of sociopath.  We kid, Nightwing.  However, I thought it was a jerk move when he grabs Batgirl's grappling gun and takes her for a boost.  Hey Dick Greyson, Batgirl has top billing!  Don't you forget that.  In fact, Batgirl has the Batgirl book and Bat BOP.  Nightwing, you have a self-titled and another book where you are engulfed in an ensemble.  I'm just joking.  I love the art in the Titans book.  A LOT!

History Lesson

Feathers and Foes are back with Butch Guice and Chuck Dixon, the creative team behind this beautiful display of a comic.  Black Canary and Dinah meet for the first time, but before they can bust out into the Kid n Play, a blast from the past causes the two birds to part again.  The Ravens.  'Nuff Said!

Check out this episode!

This issue is big, guys.  A proper meeting between Dinah and Babs.  Finally! Creative team is thrown around a lot, but the pacing in the scenes where Dinah is actually inside the Clock Tower are actually quite moving.  Yes, the two did meet at the Docks for that brief moment in the Hunt for Oracle saga, but that was not a proper sit down.  In issue 28, the two actually asked questions, answered them, felt out each other's cadence in facial expressions to speech patterns to body movement.

Butch Guice's pencils are working in this issue, earning credibility with each stroke. He and colorist Shannon Blanchard really captured the spirit of how a meeting between the two would go...if they ever took a day off from crime fighting to share a cup of Folgers.  There is so much movement and jazz in these scenes that I feel like I could have enjoyed a whole book of these two answering every mystery they have had between the two.  Of course, there are other pressing matters, such as we have Cheshire, who is back from the past, wrecking shop.  Killing scientist at Star Labs, Cheshire is at large, which causes Black Canary to be dragged into this Temporal Travel business.

This new adventure seems promising, but I can't wait for the two, Black Canary and Oracle, to team up again, in person that is.

Feathers and Foes: March Madness of Heroes Preview

Listen to our March Madness of Heroes preview!!!  Here we explain all the details you need to know about our tournament of heroes at Feathers and Foes!

Tuesday, February 28, 2017

March Madness is upon us!  We have a contest over here at Feathers and Foes.  Print the bracket, fill it out, and send it back to us completed for a chance to win a grand prize at

This is how a bracket works.  Look at the match ups above the print.  As you can see, there are different heroes that are, as the kids/gamers say, versing each other.  There will be five podcasters voting on each match up.  The best out of five advances to the next round.  Here is an example.  In the top left corner of the bracket you will see the match up Spiderman vs. Catman.  The five podcasers will vote on which one they like the most.  Let us say there were 3 votes for Spiderman and two for Catman.  Spiderman would advance to the next round and Catman would be eliminated from the tournament completely.  This process continues round after round until we have one hero remaining.

Each match up that you get correct earns you a point.  The listener with the most points wins the tournament and will be mailed a prize. Entries must be e-mailed to by March 14th.   Good luck!

Episode 46: Soldiers of Fortune

Welcome to another episode of Feathers and Foes.  This episode is dedicated to Batgirl and the Birds of Prey #7: Soldiers of Fortune, written by Julie and Shawna Benson.  Art by Claire Roe, yea!  Colors by Allen Passalaqua.  This is a fun one, taking on gentrification, realtors, Valentine's Day, screening phone calls, and more.

Soldiers of Fortune feels like the first true issue of Batgirl and the Birds of Prey.  Going undercover, Barbara Gordon's duplicity with her father, and the fun writing of the Benson sisters, are all the ingredients of a great Book!

With Claire Roe back on the book with the pencils, I feel like we are getting a sharper edge to the book, but with

Batgirl and the Birds of Prey 6

Feathers and Foes are back with the conclusion to the Who is Oracle saga.  Fenice and Santo are on the loose.  Birds vs. Snakes!  Cops and Mobsters.  This is the ultimate Gotham story.  And yes, Gus is still fanboying out!

Check out this episode!

Finally the finale.  Am I right?  Ever since this saga began, I, personally, have been waiting for it to end.  This starts off where the Birds are not a unit, which makes total sense, but I'm ready for the three of these heroes in the field, taking out bad guys, and making the world right.  Who is Oracle is quite an ambitious story line.  Although interesting, I spent most of my effort just paying attention to the Birds.  Black Canary, walking straight out the ashes of her new 52 run picks up right where she left off here.  A snotty nose punk rocker who actually knows how to kick butt.  #Rad.

This was a Huntress story, which should make me happy, but I am disappointed with the execution of how this character is coming off on the page.  Allow me to correct myself, the character is written fine, but the back story with Fenice is really turning me off.  Plus, now that I'm reading Grayson, I'm really falling in love with that interpretation of the the new 52 version of Huntress.  You can't always get what you want.  Mick Jagger has never been wrong.

The art in this book with Roge Antonio is not to my liking, but in a way, I believe fits the tone of this book.  Birds of Prey back in the day has a lot of iconic, bigger than life art of the Birds.  Rebirth has none of that in my opinion, which is not a bad thing.  However, I want Batgirl and the Birds of Prey to be a bestseller for DC Comics, which is not the case at this moment.

Birds of Prey 26: Suitor

Bane is in this issue!  How cool is that?

Check out this episode!

Bane is an intimidating figure throughout the DC universe.  He broke Batman's back one time, which had long lasting repercussions. This makes the character interesting to me, for when he shows up on the scene, any body can get it.  Even one of the members of DC's Big 3.  The art by Butch Guice is detailed, fitting, and spectacular.  The opening pages are narrated by Bane.  The Birds of Prey are like featured characters in their own book.  Believe it or not, in this situation, it's OK.

Batman lore is all over this book:  Lazarus' Pits, Demon soldiers of Ra's Al Ghul, and even a brief appearance of Talia, daughter of Ra's Al Ghul.  In all media Bane comes off in a myriad of ways.  In this story he comes off as a mad man who is mentally misguided and dangerous.  He says he's in love with Talia, so in this story he is seeking her out to choke the life out of her.  Rather disturbing premise for this issue.
Once again Black Canary is cool as every, even when Bane is sweet talking her.  Black Canary was written to switch the tone up a bit, yet there are many panels that are uncomfortable.  Circumstances got Black Canary out of a lot of compromising situations.  This book's purpose is setting up a plot slated about six issues after this.  Chuck Dixon is a master of the long game as usual.
